The Wharf Nursery School

Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEN/D)

At The Wharf Nursery School, we celebrate each child as an individual, always seeking to look for children's strengths and to build on the experiences that they start Nursery with.

We recognise that children may have a unique way of communicating and engaging with others. Some children may have a diagnosis or already be on a pathway to this by the time they join us. We firmly believe that parents know their children best and we see them as part of our team in identifying and supporting children at every stage.

We have a qualified teacher as our SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). It is their job to work alongside the child's family, Key Person and members of our SEN/D team. We work together to help children to settle, integrate into our setting and progress at their own rate through carefully planned experiences.

For the majority of each session children are supported to play and learn alongside their friends. The children also have use of a designated room which is used for individual and small group work sessions. We also have a large garden, a sensory room and a soft play, where children enjoy exploring an exciting array of resources especially designed to help with coordination and concentration.

We work very closely with educational psychologists and other professionals such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other relevant specialists in order to achieve the best we can for each child.

We know that early intervention for children is key in supporting them to have the best outcomes. Therefore, we encourage parents and carers to engage with us at the earliest opportunity about any concerns that they have in relation to their child's development. Often this is before a child starts in Nursery, as this helps us to plan for their needs.  A good way to meet us to discuss these, is through our Stay and Play sessions, which take place on a Wednesday and Thursday here at The Wharf. Alternatively, you can always phone to make an appointment to meet Zoe Bray (Headteacher), or Penny Macland (SENCO). We are always happy to help.

Please feel free to come and talk to us if you have any questions.
